The site OMGICU dedicates itself to aggregating information about celebrity sightings via social media, but this week it’s used that mission to also demonstrate just how effectively mobile users can document current events.
The setting: a highly anticipated concert debut. The method: smartphones. Combine those elements with a little editing help and a kind of video take on Storifying, and OMGICU presents R&B singer and recent internet buzz act The Weeknd’s first live show as told completely by fans in attendance.
Traditional cameras were banned, and the press wasn’t allowed to bring in much either. By culling real-time tweets and mobile footage captured during the shows, OMGICU fully still manages to recreate The Weeknd’s opening song, “High For This,” from his very first club performance in Toronto on Sunday, July 24.
Patrick Stump Mashes Up 2010 Hits
His solo album isn’t out yet, and in the past week, Patrick Stump has proven that he spends his down time doing what every other 20-something with a computer does:
1. Tumbling
2. Making a cappella YouTube videos:
He manages to fit Jay-Z and Alicia, Eminem and Rihanna, Lady Antebellum, B.o.B and Bruno Mars, and Cee-Lo into one mash-up. My YouTube videos aren’t ever quite that layered and fun, nor does my emotive singer face have anything on his. We may both be on the internet a lot, but I think Patrick wins this round.
Inception in Real-Time
Obviously November was a black hole of time-consuming fail (for this site. For my other work, it was extremely productive). Since Inception is on DVD & Blu-Ray today, I figured it was only fair to embed the real-time version of the dream levels an editor posted to YouTube.
It doesn’t all match up perfectly, but it’s still impressive to see how much does. Christopher Nolan should throw some cash at this dude, because it also put me in the right mood to watch that movie again. Where’s a Best Buy when you need one?

NPR Speaks to Antoine Dodson About Using YouTube to Get Out of the Projects

In the interview Antoine Dodson did with NPR, he mentions that he’s been using the media attention and proceeds to help support his family and eventually get out of the projects. This includes selling t-shirts and — let’s assume — the USTREAM live chats like this one where he appears in his stunna shades, hair perfectly pressed to speak with fans, sings a bit of the song, and reminds people that despite the fun, it was a real, scary situation.
I love the “Bed Intruder Song,” for the record. I hope we get an opportunity to see where this dude is again in a year, because if one viral clip does finally help him transform his life, that has to be a pretty interesting win for the internet and, of course, YouTube. Though, after Justin Bieber, I’d imagine they’re pretty set in the way of helping to facilitate success stories.

Justin Bieber is the newest face for Proactiv advertisements, crediting them with maintaining his smooth skin and giving you someone to blame for why he keeps that fresh-faced, third grader look.
Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan Star In Video For Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie”
At this point, my obsession with Megan Fox is well-documented among my friends, so it’s only fair that I try to make it abundantly clear to the internet, too. I think Megan Fox is great! I am always on her side!
I am also someone who was a young teenager when The Lord of the Rings hit theaters, loved what Peter Jackson and his team did with the story, and still tend to watch a lot of what the actors involved do even when it’s kind of wretched. (What up, Elizabethtown?) So to see the premiere of Eminem’s video for his latest single featuring Rihanna, “Love the Way You Lie” and realize that Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan star in it, playing the completely dysfunctional and abusive couple? Color me stunned by beauty and conflicted by content. I’m sure the fact that it was midnight had something to do with me being bowled over, but, really, this video is surprisingly fantastic:
The visuals are well done, the video narrative matches the lyrics enough without being entirely literal, and there are some interesting parallels drawn between Rihanna and Eminem’s separate experiences with abuse and destructive relationships. Take all that and top it with the knowledge that Megan Fox donated all of her earnings from the project to shelter for women and children who’ve suffered abuse, and this video is just where I’m at today, over and over, completely entranced.
Aurelius Oby Made Fun!
Aurelius Oby is here prove that his music is different. It’s hard to walk two feet in Los Angeles without tripping over an industry hopeful, but coming across artists with real potential is a lot harder. A twenty-year old who sings, raps, writes, and produces all of his own material, Aurelius has already started making noise in Greater Los Angeles. He’s rubbing elbows other young hopefuls and music veterans alike, including Amir Bayyan, a frequent producer for funk legends Kool & The Gang. And did we mention he’s opening for Talib Kweli next month?
Yeah, now you’re paying attention.
Made Fun got to kick it with Aurelius in the middle of his busy recording and rehearsal schedule to talk musical starts and career intentions.
