JJ Abrams and Jonathan Nolan team up for ‘Person of Interest’

I’m only just picking my way through news about the Upfronts this year. So far, the shows listed as top contenders by different media outlets have me thinking that this year fall television will be suited to my interests. It’s almost eerie how appealing shows like ‘Awake’ and ‘Up All Night’ are to me in very particular ways. I’ll need to investigate whether someone has been sneaking into my room at night and stealing my dreams, but before that, let’s talk about ‘Person of Interest.’

I somehow missed that JJ Abrams and Jonathan Nolan are working together. JJ Abrams loves to use magical realism and supernatural concepts to build suspense. Jonathan “Jonah” Nolan is director Christopher Nolan’s brother (although, for some reason, Chris Nolan is British and Jonah is sort of an American bro) who cowrote ‘The Dark Knight.’ This fall, JJ Abrams’ penchant for subtly creepy world-building self is producing a show Nolan’s created that brings those elements into reality.

As Abrams describes it in the video above:

“That idea of having people who are very much human and very real, and yet at the same that doing things that are without questions very heroic—that was a very exciting prospect.”

Aka Batman is Jim Caviezel but crazier and actually kills people. AKA Happy Birthday to me!

I’ve somehow developed a weird aversion to Jim Caviezel, but now I can’t remember why. Perhaps my general annoyance at ‘The Passion of the Christ’ as a film has fallen on his shoulders in part. That’s unfortunate, but Caviezel was also in ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ and excelled at revenge. Now I can’t wait to see him spend several episodes punishing people for potential crimes and then inevitably having some moral dilemmas later, since Caviezel’s also talented portraying characters who cry about personal responsibility. LOST’s Michael Emerson also gets his disturbing on again, and IMDB tells me that Taraji P. Henson, the Oscar-nominated BAMF of heart (yes, that is a thing) will play the lead female, but she must not show up in the pilot much since she hasn’t been featured in any of the press materials.

I can’t wait. Don’t let me down, Jonah and JJ! There are too many gold elements here.

‘Person of Interest’ will air Thursdays this fall and is among the preview pilots scheduled for the 2011 Comic-con in San Diego.

Rob Zombie directs “Torturer” commercial for Woolite

Not even the Clorox song about mama’s magic can withstand the coolness of this new laundry detergent ad.

I’m not sure what’s more amazing: that Woolite asked Rob Zombie to create a commercial for them or they he agreed. Although Zombie doesn’t seem too sure either.

“It’s a very bizarre TV commercial for a product like this,” said Zombie. “Honestly, I was shocked when they called me to do it.”

A special message from Dexter Morgan

‘Dexter’ is coming back this fall, and I couldn’t be more anxious about it. I finally got over my ridiculous fear of watching seasons 2 - 5 this year. I enjoyed the first season one so much that I thought nothing could compare, but this year I caught up, continued to love it, and crave new episodes every day.

Plus, Mos Def has joined the cast this round.  Colin Hanks will play Dexter’s biggest opponent this season, but even a few episodes of Mos and Michael C. Hall playing opposite one another should be a great time for me.

New ‘Luther’ Series 2 Trailer Online

After a whole lot of silence and rumor, news about the BBC crime drama ‘Luther’ is finally starting to surface. To say that I’ve been sitting on my hands, salivating in anticipation of even the smallest bit of information about more of this series is, really, only a completely accurate representation of my life.

I love a lot of things: ridiculous pop music, rom coms, Zac Efron, bubblegum-flavored popsicles, etc. I don’t love any kind of entertainment more than I love a really intense narrative about sociopaths and crime. ‘Luther’ delivers Alice Morgan (played by Ruth Wilson), a woman who may have killed her own parents, and then seals the deal by adding a genius but possibly unhinged detective in the form of Idris Elba. His character, DCI John Luther, starts out hunting Alive in the first series but over time, the two build a twisted friendship that culminates in Alice helping John evade murder charges.

Series 2 will pick up right in the middle of that debacle and introduce a brand new mystery. According to TV by the Numbers, the new series features “a masked man wanders the streets of London, carrying out ritualistic murders in historic locations, working his way up to one final masterpiece.”

If you haven’t seen this show, find it. Watch it. Get ready to writhe in a joyful fashion over series 2. ‘Luther’ premieres October 2011 on BBC One.

‘The Aurors’ Should Be A Real Harry Potter-inspired TV Show

I hate April Fool’s Day, because I’m far too gullible in my everyday existence, and this whole day is full of people trying their best to trick me. (I got my college acceptance letter on April 1st and was hesitant to believe that up until I actually showed up at the school.) It’s even worse nowadays, because an internet full of new media means sometimes whole production teams hinting at cool games, shows, and products, and then ripping my heart out of my chest.

Take, for instance, this trailer for a new show called ‘The Aurors.’ Sometimes ideas based on Harry Potter are laughable and embarrassing, but in this case, the only thing embarrassing is how I’d rush to a cable-ready TV every week to watch it, slow people on public transportation be damned.

Today, I hate IGN. By hate, I mean I love you; I love this. Why you gotta treat me so bad?

[Many thanks to Biz, who sent the link my way.]

‘Celebrity Apprentice’ Gary Busey Makes Project-Management a No-Brainer

For his first few tasks on The Celebrity Apprentice, actor Gary Busey provided an expected amount of inexplicable gibberish metaphor. He’s the comic relief with a lot of heart on Team Backbone, but in the words of Mark McGrath, the men’s team decided to “stop handling him with kid gloves” and put Busey to the project-manager test during the newest challenge to advertise RVs during last Sunday’s episode, “Unhappy Campers.”

How To Project-Manage And Win Like Gary Busey

1. Give everybody money, even if you don’t have it.
2. Play an impromptu game of night baseball.
3. ???
4. Profit for charity!!

He bumped heads with Lil’ Jon early on in the episode. Mark McGrath then nearly had a panic attack when Busey decided to take a load off with Jose Canseco, and then briefly entertained using video evidence to get him fired later, which would have at least been a better ploy than Marlee Matlin’s unsuccessful attempt to get Dionne Warwick thrown out last week:

Can Kanye West Get His Own Home Decorating Show?

Surely you’ve seen the clip from Jimmy Kimmel Live from the other day, featuring Josh Groban’s promo for his collection Kanye West Tweet songs?

I’ve been singing “Do you know where to find marble conference tables? I’m looking to have a conference…” ever since I first watched it and then assaulted everyone I know with the link. It’s the latest in an overabundance of golden Kanye Tweet coverage and jokes taking over the internet since the day Kanye officially got a Twitter account.

My other favorite funny thing related to Kanye’s tweets is the series of “Kids Reenact” clips from a couple months ago. “Ninjas” is the best of them, because it hits you with hilarity, and then sticks some unexpected melancholy in your groove, and I always think — man, why do ninjas reject Kanye like that? I need to get my ninja friends to hit up Kanye West and tech him a cool kick or two. He seems like he’d enjoy that. That can’t only be me, can it?

But my second favorite video is “Cherub Rug”:

And after watching it again today, I realized that the only logical step for Kanye West after becoming a Twitter celebrity is to look into producing and hosting his own decorating program. Since TLC already has way too much personal lifestyle programming, Kanye can one-up everybody and take a primetime spot on Oprah Winfrey’s brand new TV network, OWN.

Just imagine it — you, sitting at home wondering where to go to get that custom made marble table for your home office, and right on time the theme music to “Let Your Home Be Great!” comes on the tube. Kanye West appears to tell you with all the vocal exclamation points in the world that if you live in NYC, Dallas, or Houston, it’s your lucky day. Hardrox Custom Tables has got your needs covered!!!!! Angelenos can look on Craigslist though, because there’s always someone selling a marble table in Woodland Hills. BAM. Done and done. Thank you, Kanye. Another decor problem solved.

Things would proceed like that for about 13 episodes a season, with the requisite holiday “Passion for Flashing” episode where Kanye would steal some of Extreme Makeover: Home Editions’s thunder. He’d elevate some down-on-their-luck bunch and gifts them with extravagance for the home, their wardrobes, etc. Tag lines would include, “Mondays at 8/7c, let Kanye West take your life and redesign it!”

Who do I have to get in a meeting to pitch this? I’m surprised it isn’t premiering this spring, quite honestly. Quick, I need to send some memos!! And I’ll even title my proposal “Stop Putting Joan Rivers on TV: A Kanye West Solution,” so that there’s no way it could possibly get overlooked.
