DJ Caruso and Emmy Rossum invite users ‘Inside’ one of the first social films

If you like thrillers, the internet, the idea of being in a movie and have been looking for a way to combine these interests for a long time, then wait no more. Director DJ Caruso has the vanity project for you: his new social media film experiment ‘Inside.’

The premise is relatively simple. Emmy Rossum stars as Christina, a 20-something who finds herself trapped in a room with nothing but a computer. Viewers and internet users then get to play a key role in her attempts to free herself. DJ Caruso and team will cast real social media users, and those people will get to interact with and influence Rossum’s character.

Almost every crime procedural TV show or movie has done some episode where a killer broadcasts a murder via untraceable web connection, has hits kill victims faster, some super computer uses wireless to direct electronics to kill us, and so on. DJ Caruso even got in on the technology thriller game with 2008’s ‘Eagle Eye,’ but ‘Inside’ will challenge him, Rossum, writers and crew to execute a story that actually calls upon and engages ordinary social media and internet users live.

Social media users can audition to play a role in ‘Inside’ now. Then, on Monday, July 25th, pieces of the film will be released on various social media platforms until the film’s conclusion. All parts will be collected and edited together after that and released as a single project on August 14, 2011. Judging whether or not the film works or sucks will, of course, happen concurrently.

For all updates related to ‘Inside,’ keep an eye on TheInsideExperience.com.

“Hot Ad Girls” Made Fun

Hey, have you seen ‘Who Is That Hot Girl?’ on Tumblr? On the surface, it’s another site about hot women. On the other hand, it’s a blog that dedicated to giving names and quick backgrounds to generally unknown actresses in the industry. Also, I support attractive ladies doing their thing, so I’m cool with seeing more of them.

For example:

Q: Who is the cute girl/actress in the Apple Facetime Haircut commercial?

A: Kether Donohue. She is a 25 year old actress who also does voice work. She is best known for the voice of the temperamental divaesque Lily on the Nicktoons Network “anime” series Kappa Mikey, Luna & Angela Rains on Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, and Zoe on Dinosaur King. Donahue was also featured in the video for “Coder Girl” by Dale Chase. Thanks Wikipedia.

Now where’s the blog about hot dudes? Because I also support them.

Hulu Sets Users Back 15 Years

Have you checked out Hulu.com today? For its own April fun, the video-streaming site has decided to pay homage to a time web design should never revisit: 1996.

Check out popular clips from X-Files, music videos for 90s radio hits, images with a lot of radio static, and about a dozen buttons, image counters, and blinking text. Oh, and don’t forget to sign the guestbook. Dial-up connections beware.

Chuck the SEO Rapper Teaches “Page Rank”

Have you heard the song “Page Rank” by Chuck? It’s about good SEO practices. I would just like to thank Schoolhouse Rock, the entire hip-hop generation, and the Internet for leading us to this glorious 21st century moment:

I don’t teach any best practices for SEO seminars, but if I ever do, I’m recreating this whole experience.

Qwiki.com Set to Make Science Fiction into Real Life

A co-worker introduced me to Qwiki yesterday morning. Watching this video, I am both awed and terrified —

On the one hand, they use a WALL-E clip to illustrate how they plan to propel Internet users into the future. On the other hand, they use a WALL-E clip, which is one of those movies that shows how the human obsession with technology and convenience leads to us floating around in space as bunch of blobs wearing the same one-piece (now in red and blue).

Will Qwiki be the next Coolest Website Ever? Will it flop? Will it kill Bing and, more importantly and impressively, Google? Should I start designing the last one-piece I’ll ever need right now?

Why Mark Zuckerberg Is Dusting “The Social Network” Off His Shoulders

As Jesse Eisenberg says in the video above, the word is that Mark Zuckerberg rented a theater and took employees to see the movie. Plenty of smarter individuals have already talked the movie itself to death. It’s been analyzed from many great angles, so instead of trying to make a unique splash in a huge wave pool, I’ll just comment on this news and state the obvious:

Damn, it must feel good to be a gangsta.

Zuckerberg’s handled the press and questions surrounding The Social Network really well thus far. He reminds people that it’s fiction, donates $100 million to Newark, NJ schools, and then probably goes home and bathes in billions at night. In fact, “bathe in billions and push on” has become the new statement for brushing shoulders off between me and my brother, in honor of this amazingly GQ plays made by the real Mark Zuckerberg this year. I’m not familiar enough with the kind of business awards out there to recommend one in particular, but this guy should get the business equivalent of the Oscar for his performance dealing with the movie media frenzy.

Actually, I wanted to give him my own award, but what do you give to a man who can buy everything? The only answer is to share the winning mix of popular hip-hop singles I play for myself on the way to work in the mornings. I’ve retitled it in light of recent cinematic events.

Here’s the tracklist —

‘Catfish’ Trailer Proves Internet Is Still Creepy, But It’s Cool, Bro

When I went to see Easy A today, the trailer for Catfish was among the previews. First of all, Easy A was alright enough. Emma Stone continues to own a part of my heart by being hilarious and effectively relatable. Second of all, I want to see Catfish.

I’m kind of bummed I hadn’t heard anything about it before now, because it’s definitely the sort of movie that appeals to the internet creeper plus meta-loving wretch in me. At first I thought it was some kind of surprise new trailer for The Social Network, but no, it’s actually a movie that just proves again how much social media has infiltrated all aspects of life, namely Facebook and, more recently, Twitter. (The best part of the VMAs last Sunday was how every correspondent in the pre-show got a lower third with their names and then their Twitter handle under that.) This movie also, in its way, celebrates the continued amateur/DIY aesthetic people love about the 21st century with — bonus! — a voyeurism angle.

Watching other real people hook up is the foundation for modern media. That’s what The Real World and XTube have taught me. And it’s repeated a hundred times a day that we live in an age where everyone can be a creator. (My new iPod Touch apparently shoots 720p HD video. An exclusive first look at my major motion picture will be online tomorrow.) Add in a little Paranormal Activity-esque suspense and Catfish seems like a pretty perfect amalgamation of what gets people going these days. It’s also just a really nerdy endeavor, this indirect indicator of how much film, social networking, and reality media have merged, but that’s also part of what makes it seem interesting.

Although it doesn’t make a great case for internet dating. It’s hard out here for digital love.
