Wim Wenders’ Dance Tribute Movie ‘Pina’ Gets US Distribution Deal

Here’s some amazing news that I missed last week: director Wim Wenders’ 3D documentary about the famous German choreographer Pina Bausch, Pina, will now get a limited US release.

In a recent interview with Dazed Digital, Wenders described the film as “the complete reversal of what theatre and dance usually is.” It was originally meant to be a collaborative project between Bausch and Wenders, but when Pina Bausch died in June 2009, the work became a celebration of Bausch’s style. Pina is now an elegy, realized by Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal company players through Wender’s lense.

“She discovered a new form. The language of our body has always been there, of course, but we didn’t know so much about it,” Wenders told Dazed.” We feel we know something about this as filmmakers and that we can judge it and give advice to actors and make corrections, but when you see Pina’s work? Then you realise we are all fucking amateurs in this language…”

The Guardian’s review of the film even dared to say that presenting the film in 3D helps created an “immensely attractive” theater space rather that detracts from the choreography. There are no definite US release dates yet, nor any official word on exactly where people should be able to see the film, but keep your ear to ground, because this Pina will definitely be a must-see for 2011.

Justin Bieber Dance-Off For The American Music Awards

This an American Music Awards promo, but you don’t find that out until the very end. Up until that time, it’s a pretty silly video featuring a bunch of burly bikers performing a dance routine to Justin Bieber.

First of all, what bar is this? I would like to make it my regular spot. Secondly, it’s promos like these that have made me defend advertising as place that can still be fun and creative for filmmakers and writers alike. (That, and my general existence a contrarian but mostly the fun part.)

Happy Thursday!

“Dancing at the Movies” Music Video

The person who showed me this Media Solutions mash-up of dancing from dozens of movies said that if it didn’t make me smile, then there was something wrong with me.

I’m happy to report that I am someone who does not have any problems with joy! From Dirty Dancing to Honey, there’s probably a little something for everybody.

‘Black Swan’ Trailer, starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis

This trailer for Black Swan makes this movie look like the horror film remix of Center Stage, where Peter Gallagher and that blond dude were put through a grinder and came out looking like Vincent Cassel —

So, this looks amazing, essentially. It doesn’t hurt that Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis are gorgeous and make sure to capitalize on that by making out.
