Karmin Covers Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” with Questlove

Questlove knows everybody. That isn’t the point here, but I always forget that, and then he does things like pop up on semi-random covers of Nicki Minaj singles to remind folks. At least the artists he works with are usually deserving.

Right now, Karmin are known more for their YouTube covers than their original songs, but I’m curious to see where they go. Amy Renee has a retro-pop flavor of cuteness about her, but her voice is fuller than I might have expected. There’s a soulful element that adds something to the sunshine cover of a track that’s already upbeat. This is perfect for a sunny Saturday.

Cover Corner: The Rescues Take On Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”

There are certain things in music reinterpretation that will always make me bite. For instance, mashups featuring hip-hop tracks set pop instrumentation are gold, I don’t care what anybody says. Few things are as fun “Collide You A Drank.” I’m also a sucker for taking a pop hit and turning it into something slow and moody, just this side of eerie.

The Rescues take Katy Perry’s chart-topper “Teenage Dream” and transform it into something creeping and epic all in the same few minutes. The arrangement here is everything I like to sit in the dark to, letting their harmonies create new visuals in my head. There’s something foreboding about this version — a little more desperate, even — and it really works.

Cee-Lo’s “No One’s Gonna Love You” Video

Some of these visuals are not safe for work, the saying goes, but the video is intriguing nonetheless. I love the original version of this song, by Band of Horses, and I like what Cee-Lo’s done with his cover (mixed by Paul Epworth).

The song will be featured on Cee-Lo’s upcoming release, Cee-Lo is the Lady Killer.
